I'll start with the pros:
1) this thing is lightweight, about as much as a gallon of milk. My previous vacuum was a cheapo (by cheap I mean about the same price as this) dirt devil and it easily weighed 20 pounds.
2) the vacuum is easy to work on if you ever have to. You can have it apart in 10 or 15 minutes with nothing more than a #2 phillips, swapping the motor shouldn't be more than a 20 minute job but judging by the size of the thing it should last a while, the carbon brushes are also huge so I don't expect to have to shell out the $75 to replace those any time this decade.
3) it's powerful, the aforementioned beefy motor sucks up everything just fine, from stale cereal my 1 year old hid behind the couch for later to my wife's forgotten hair ties to every single cord I forget to get out of the way before I start vacuuming. I expect the belt would give out before the motor would if she ever jams up.
I see folks talking about not being able to pick up stuff against the walls but if you go in front ways instead of sideways it'll suck it up good.
4) swapping the bags is easy, just hold on each side of the hole on the stiff cardboard part and push straight toward the port.
5) it's cheap! You don't get a lot of features but it's a vacuum for crying out loud! You get a lot of suck for the dollar.
Cons:
1) No attachments but you should know that already. It's a vacuum and that's it.
2) loud as hell, but it isn't like you have to listen to it all day every day (unless you do, then get some earplugs)
3) those belts are a pain to swap but you only gotta do it once or twice a year, just swapped my first one today after 13 months of use. Be prepared to manhandle your vacuum to get the brush reseated once the belt is on it.
In conclusion, you get what you pay for, Oreck compromises on features to give you a good vacuum for the price.
This new style model may say Oreck, but it is no Oreck. Granted, the price has come down considerably since the shake up with the company a few years ago, and as the saying goes, “You get what you pay for.”
The (few) positives:
- very light and easy to get around the house
- Long power cord, so I can vacuum a whole level of the house without needing to change outlets
- strong vacuum motor
The negatives:
- the metal handle is attached to the plastic vac tube with one lousy screw. It’s constantly flexing and bending as I vacuum, and I know it won’t be long before the handle snaps off
- the plastic threaded collar that connect the bag attachment portion of the the tube to the intake part, you can never get tight enough. I have big strong hands, and even after cranking on that thing as hard as I can, it still wants to work itself loose all the time.
- the bag attachment. Oh God, the bag attachment! It’s terrible! No matter what you do, you cannot get the bags to stay on for more than a couple vacuums, leaving you with a lovely surprise when you go to change the bag - a plume of dust and debris to the face!
I only wish I’d cashed in on the 1 year warranty before it was too late. Thankfully, I didn’t pay $300 for this one, so I won’t be broken hearted when I have to throw this piece of crap into the dumpster. Sad what’s happened to Oreck. I guess it’ll be a Sanitaire for me next time.
Now, #2 has been taken apart, checked brush and fan, nothing is stuck, new belt. Using it and all of a sudden brush roll stops rolling. Whines when on and I cant turn it by hand when off. Dont have a star screwdriver on hand at work to take apart. So grab #1, finish that house. Next house, that one starts squeaking. Give up, throw that one in vehicle, finish house with owners vac.
Get home, take both apart and am thoroughly pissed off at what I find. The end of the brush roll and wheel for the belt have somehow melted and ground themselves together, explaining why roll will not turn at all. #1 that was squeaking has chunks of plastic wedged in end of roll that look like same problem is beginning.
I have never had so many problems with an Oreck before in my life. The store in my area closed so this was the first time I bought online. Will not do that again. I don't know if I was sent junk machines or if the quality has gone down the tubes. I have machines I purchased 5 years ago, used for the year and kept at home to use. With a few maintenance parts, they are still running well. They are going to be my work vacuums now as I research other brands.
So disappointed in Oreck.
And of course my return time just ran out so these will go right in the garbage.

Don't let the out-dated ergonomics and style of this Oreck fool you.
I’ve owned a shark, a dyson, Hoover, kennmore, Electrolux, even a variety of wet-dry vacuums. This Oreck out performs them all, on both tile & carpet.
A+ Oreck

Most of the upright vacuums that are readily available in stores seem to be heavily-marketed to look like they're more than they (like what is done with modern cars), and with this comes a significant amount of bulk and loss in functionality. I wanted a vacuum I could put in my closet when I wasn't using it, and something that went flat to vacuum underneath beds and other low-lying furniture.
You'll probably know by looking at this whether it's what you want - you are likely looking for function over form. It turns on and off. It has one height only and the cord is manually wrapped around cord retainers at the back. It's light (I can carry it one-handed up the stairs). It has good suction. It's quite noisy. It doesn't have a light. It doesn't have attachments. It is just what I was looking for.
For cleaning things other than floors, get Oreck's canister vacuum (BB1200DB or similar). It's a nice bridge between large canister vacuums and cheap handhelds and wins again in very similar ways.

Stopped working properly after two months. Quite disappointed after hearing great things about this vacuum.
Update: Amazon Customer Service was great. I have a replacement coming, will update my review and score based upon the performance of the replacement.
Final Update: After running the new one in it seems obvious that my original one was faulty. The replacement has performed well and has had no issues.
The cleaning power of the vacuum is very good, the suction is quite powerful and it does provide a nice deep clean.
The only flaw of this vacuum is that it is quite loud. Not a major issue since I have a quiet handheld for quick pick-up jobs. You don't want to run this too late or early.
Noise aside, it is a very good vacuum.
