July 30 – August 3, 2021

ASD Family Camp is a four-day, Christian family-camp experience at Covenant Point, designed to build community and support among families who have children with autism. The program values flexibility around the needs of individuals, intergenerational experiences, meaningful connection among all participants, and spiritual formation. Covenant Point provides delicious meals enjoyed together, all-family games, age-appropriate activities and worship, engaging Bible- studies, and exposure to the beauty of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Your family will rest and play together in a safe and encouraging environment, while growing close to each other and God.

What ASD Family Camp is:

  • A week of family camp intentionally planned with the person with ASD and family in mind.
  • A safe environment for a family and all its individuals to be who they are.
  • Community – an opportunity to connect with others on a similar journey.
  • Price includes four nights family lodging and healthy, home-cooked meals from Tuesday dinner until Saturday breakfast.

What ASD Family Camp isn’t:

  • Therapy – although being at camp may very well be therapeutic!
  • Support Group – although support and companions on this journey may be found.
  • Seminar/Conference

This program is heavily subsidized by our annual Triathlon Fundraiser. (We’re still working on whether or not the Triathlon will happen in 2021 or not. Stay tuned!)

Key Changes for Summer 2021 ASD Family Camp:

During their week of camp, anytime campers are outside, or with their own cabin group, face masks will not be required. Per state of Michigan rules, face masks will be needed in very limited situations - such as when entering the health center, during camper check-in and pick-up, and anytime campers are indoors among campers from other cabin groups. Because of our program modifications to maximize the outdoors, we thankfully anticipate very limited mask use during camp programs.

All campers and staff, both vaccinated and unvaccinated, are required to self-monitor and complete a simple 14-day Symptom and Exposure Log prior to arrival. If at any point during the 14 day log, you answer “yes” to one of the symptom or exposure questions, please contact our office immediately and our medical staff will work with you to determine next steps. Additionally, during your camper’s week here, all campers and staff will receive brief daily health screenings.

Mainland camps will operate at reduced capacity. Additionally, we will use “cohorts,” or medium-sized groupings, to reduce overlap between campers when programming requires closer proximity. Islanders will function as their own cohort, and Mainland campers will be divided into two cohorts of about 35 campers each, (about five cabin groups).

High-touch areas of our site and facilities will be sanitized at an increased rate. New hand-washing and sanitizer stations have been added to key areas, including all building entrances.

We are strongly encouraging our summer staff to get vaccinated. All year-round staff have been vaccinated. Testing will be utilized as necessary, in conjunction with our local health department, to assess staff health throughout the summer.

We know this has been a difficult year for many campers and families. Our summer staff training process will have an increased focus on mental, emotional, and social health, in anticipation of camper needs. Additionally, our pastor of the week and expanded medical team will be ready to provide support.

We have simplified and shortened our summer schedule significantly in light of the complexity of operating safely. As such, some weeks have been eliminated and remaining weeks have been shortened to various degrees, depending on the week. (Please note that not all weeks begin and end on the same day of the week). Extra time between programs will allow us to thoroughly clean and give staff needed time to rest and monitor health.

Unfortunately, we are not offering a charter bus service to camp this summer because we could not find a way to safely operate it under the current conditions. We trust this is a one-year pause and that next summer the bus will be back. We hope our afternoon pick-up times on the last day of the camp session will help facilitate your transportation arrangements. We encourage you to contact us directly if you are unable to find a transportation solution for your camper.

In order to reduce risk onsite at Covenant Point, we are implementing a modified camper check-in procedure. For the check-in and check-out procedure, parents, campers and staff are asked to wear face masks when six feet of distance cannot be maintained, even when outside. Additionally, parents are asked to refrain from entering camper cabins during check-in. Staff will be available to greet, reassure, help with luggage, bring campers to their cabins, get settled in, and answer any questions. Camper pick-up will involve a similar process, and will take place at the new time of 1pm - following lunch.

A suspected or confirmed case at camp will result in clear and timely communication to family members, quarantining and medical care of the camper, supervised and programmed isolation of the whole cabin group, and close contact with our local health department. If a case is confirmed, we will work with you to arrange a plan for prompt pick-up.

If, because of a COVID-19 exposure, illness, or related concern, you need to cancel, you will receive a full refund minus a $25 processing fee. Alternatively, you may transfer your deposit and fees to a future Covenant Point program. In the event of a full camp cancellation by Covenant Point due to COVID-19, all registration fees, including full deposit, will be refunded.

Despite the challenges, we are committed to making this summer an exceptional, transformative, safe and fun experience for our campers.
