Covenant Women

Venture Out, Aug. 4 – 7, Pictured Rocks National Shoreline

It was an intrepid group of women, 11 and 1/2 in all, who took to the trails and waters of Lake Superior for this summer’s adventure.  The group gelled together and thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company. It was awesome to have times of laughter and stories but also moments of deep discussion and sharing about faith issues. Devotions were led by Megan (our mother to be) as well as any member who wanted to tell what God was doing in her life. Each person dedicated this trip to people in their lives who needed prayer.  New to this year was a kayaking experience along the sandstone cliffs of Pictured Rocks. Using tandem kayaks,  fortunately the day was calm and waves were minimal. Paddling through rock arches and along magnificent cliffs was a unique activity for all. A total of 12 miles was hiked and one thrilling sunset over Superior was witnessed.  Thanks to all who came. It was quite the trip!

We welcomed a lot of people to come and help us with a variety project here at Covenant Point!

Some of those projects included: helping put a new roof on Cedar Lodge, new curtains in Pine and the Nature Building, cutting firewood, putting together retreat mailers and repainting the basement of Cedar Lodge.

We are so thankful for all the help we received this volunteer weekend and continue to receive year to year!

Venture Out Women’s Back Pack Trip 2013

Away we went on an 18 mile walk in the woods and along the waters of Lake Superior at majestic and scenic Pictured Rocks National Shoreline near Munising, MI. This year six women participated–yearly returnees were Julie Bladel and Linda Johnson, second time attender, Sarah Hillabrand,  first timer, Joan Fisher, and leaders from Point, Jane Frasier and Megan Nyberg. Despite rain trying to dampen the spirits at various times and cold nights which reduced the bug population, everyone enjoyed the time together and delighted in being a part of this back country area. Meeting a variety of folks on the trail added to the adventure–even the group we had to yell at one night for making too much noise after midnight.  Each person especially commented on the devotional times with Megan who shared thoughts on spiritual disciplines. The discussion and prayer time that followed was a blessing as was the time of reflection on the trail or at each night’s camp site. The purpose of Venture Out is to experience time away with a group of women and leave behind the clutter of our daily lives. We all did just that!

Christmas Camp 2012/13

This years Christmas Camp was awesome, as usual, filled with broomball tournaments, abominable snowmen, lots of reading around the fireplace, and good conversation.

Our associate director, Bill Fish, was our speaker for this week and he spoke on the topic of “emmanuel, God with us” focusing on the many ways in which God, through Christ, came and remains in this world.  Some of these ways include through His word, the Bible, community (friends, family and the body of Christ), and communion with one another.   A highlight of Christmas Camp is always the familiar and new faces that we get to meet and be with throughout the peaceful, yet exciting week.

Special congratulations go to “Serenity Now!” the Wieloch led broomball champions who secured their fame as second-time broomball champions.

Summer Family camp registration has begun, we strive at camp to create restful, rejuvenating weeks for families and friends to come and experience all the beauty that exists in God’s creation.  If you joined us this Christmas Camp, we would love to see you in the summer, and if you come to family camp in the summer we would love to see you next year at Christmas Camp!

Experience fellowship and God’s creation with the Covenant Point staff & alumni snowshoe backpacking trip in the Porcupine Mountains.  Meals, transportation, and a rustic cabin will be provided. Snowshoe and backpack rental are included. After being outfitted with necessary gear, we will travel by van to Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The remote cabin is a somewhat rigorous four mile ski/snowshoe from the trail head. The first morning we wake in the wilderness will be spent exploring, enjoying God’s creation, having quiet time, fun, and fellowship over meals and conversation in the great outdoors or a rustic cabin setting. The next day the group will snowshoe/ski back to the van, and travel back to Covenant Point by 4:00 PM.

Porcupine Mountains Winter Camping

This past week a group of our full time staff headed out into the Porcupine Mountains for a winter camping trip. We ventured out with two objectives 1) to enjoy an adventure in this beautiful place we live, and 2) to scout the area for future winter camping retreats that we hope to develop in the next year. We skied in about four miles and stayed overnight in a simple one-room log cabin owned by the park.  From there we were able to take off on a fun off-trail snow-shoe hike by map and compass. We were treated by Dustin’s excellent cooking skills and shared many laughs and a few games by candlelight. We ended our trip with an exciting, mostly down-hill, ski back to our van. Even though it was just one night, being further out in the wilderness to rest and enjoy God’s creation was a wonderful and refreshing gift. So, stay tuned for details on forthcoming winter camping trips next winter.  For now, enjoy the pictures!

Covenant Womens Retreat 2011

September 23-25, 2011

What happens when a 150 women gather for a weekend?  They draw closer to God and grow in their faith. They share in building relationships. They are serious, lively, active, and joyful. They encourage each other and enjoy each other. They talk about personal and life issues. They enjoy good food, laughter, and discussion at meals. They spend time in quiet and reflection, observing the change and beauty of autumn. They see the Creator’s touch in nature and in each other.  They take delight in family moments with daughters and moms. They pray to a God who hears, a Savior who loves them, and a Spirit who sustains them. They listen and process the meaning of shalom.  They appreciate Judy Howard Peterson and the powerful message and challenge she presented in her talks. They go away changed, renewed, encouraged, loved, and ready to once more take on the many joys and demands of their lives in the U.P. of Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Vermont.
